A proud techy
Thomas is one of more than 100 engineers at DEIF. ‘Cooperating with that many peers enables me to specialize in whatever field of engineering I want—and I can always get great advice if I need it’, Thomas says. Right now, he is developing a game changing genset controller platform that will turn the world’s generator control industry upside down.
Putting theory into practice
Right before completing his M.Sc. E.E. in Digital Signal Processing at Aalborg University, Thomas found a job with a smaller company in Copenhagen, so he moved to the capital of Denmark. ‘It was great getting to try out my engineering skills in real life’, he continues. During that employment, Thomas got the chance to be stationed abroad and moved to Washington D.C. for six months helping the company out finalizing development of a product for the US market. ‘That was quite a challenge. But a great one. It gave me the opportunity to learn more English and get a hands-on understanding of the importance of developing solutions and features that make a difference to the end user, and not just for me’, he adds.
‘When I came back, I worked as a consultant for some years, primarily in the Copenhagen area, but also in Jutland. During that time, I became affiliated with DEIF’s wind division, working with customer projects. A chance for me to utilize and further build on what I learned from being stationed in the US, among other things’.
Developing power control solutions of the future
‘A couple of years later, I applied for a job at DEIF and was employed. Starting out working in the application group, I was soon deep into the development of the basic framework and data communication for a brand-new range of controller solutions for the world’s power generating industries. We started from scratch, so I have been involved in conceptualizing how we wanted the future platform and core of DEIF’s controllers to work and behave in real life. Extremely challenging—great fun!’

group as a SW designer in the ML 300 team. ML 300 is a new
platform of controller units and solutions on which
DEIF’s core business will be based for many years to come.’
A couple of years into his employment, Thomas was promoted to Senior Software Designer, R&D Application, and today primarily cooperates with classification societies on planned future requirements, adapting architecture and design for both standard and customized products and solutions to accommodate to them.
‘At, DEIF we really work as a team. Everyone has a say. I have come to learn that speaking your mind gives influence. Making up roughly 20% of DEIF’s entire workforce, R&D engineering is a highly respected profession at DEIF’.
‘In R&D, we work to identify new environmentally friendly ways of increasing overall performance while at the same time reducing maintenance intervals and fuel consumption for the world’s power generating industries. So I can always find professional challenges—and it feels nice to try and deliver our own little contribution to making the world greener. For the new platform, for instance, we have created load-dependent start and stop calculations and temperature-dependent cooldown functionality, which stops the engine cooldown when the engine coolant water temperature reaches the configured threshold before the cooldown timer expires. The cooldown can be shorter than when just a timer is used and therefore reduces fuel consumption’.
Techy? A nickname to be proud of at DEIF
‘We also have various engineering groups dedicated to specific corners of our profession, for instance the ‘Linux Group’ or the ‘Platform Architecture Group’. It gets real techy at times’, Thomas continues. ‘But actually that is exactly what drives DEIF forward. Without all the techy stuff, DEIF wouldn’t exist. So I guess being called a techy at DEIF is more of a compliment, something to be proud of. That’s how I feel about it anyway’, Thomas ends the interview.
